Katherine Low Level Bridge
Each year during the wet season from about Jan through to Mar and sometimes even as late as mid April, Katherine and most of the Top End receive up to 400 mm of rain each month for 3 months of the year. The river system swells and it’s enough water to supply top end for the rest of the year.
The Katherine River itself swells every year and is gauged by the river level marker on the rail bridge as you leave the town on the left hand side of the road.
I took two photos from the same position to show the difference in levels from the dry to the wet. Its just amazing the amount of water that runs through here every year. This shot was taken when the bridge level was at 11mtrs and I have been here when it was at 19mtrs, so this is pretty small in comparison to some other years.

The transofrmation of season and landscape sure is amazing ! How about the fvarious floodlevels marked on the bridge pylons – stand below those and look up late in the dry season…amazing !
